Update 1 on police enforcement of injunction order in Houston, BC
2020-02-07 16:41 PST
Following the establishment of the exclusion zone at kilometre 27 of the Morice West Forest Service Road on February 6, 2020, a total of 6 people camped at kilometre 39.5 were arrested for obstruction after refusing to leave the area. They have all been released from custody, without charges or conditions.
Later that afternoon, at approximately 1:30 pm, the RCMP’s Senior Commander provided support to the Wet’suwet’en Hereditary Chiefs and other supporters, and facilitated access to the camp set up at the 39.5 km mark in order to conduct a ceremony. Assisted by members of the Division Liaison Team and other officers from the Community-Industry Safety Office, the group was led to the site where they held the ceremony for approximately 2 hours. Prior to departure, the group retrieved the personal belongings of the 6 individuals that were taken into custody earlier in the day. All persons returned to kilometre 27 without incident.
The RCMP’s enforcement operation of the BC Supreme Court’s injunction order continued today, February 7, 2020. At approximately 8:30 am, police officers reached the 44 km mark of the Morice West Forest Service Road and the court-ordered injunction was read to the protesters at scene. During the course of 7 hours, several individuals refused to leave the area, with one climbing a tree and others securing themselves inside a bus and on a tower. Officers also noticed that the Lamprey Creek Bridge support beams appear to have been cut and the bridge is unsafe for all traffic, including foot traffic. The RCMP will be entering into a criminal investigation into this matter under Section 247 for traps likely to cause bodily harm, or Section 430(1) for mischief.
At approximately 1:30 pm, 2 individuals were arrested, and at approximately 3:30 pm, another 2 individuals were arrested, all for breaching the injunction order. Attempts are currently being made to have them transported to the Houston RCMP Detachment for processing.
